Food Industry BMP
In December 2007 the Rivanna Stormwater Education Partnership mailed a brochure and a cover letter to 261 local restaurants and cafeterias with information on ways that food service-related waste can pollute stormwater, along with practices that can help prevent this pollution. Both the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle have regulations that prohibit the discharge of any non-stormwater flow into the storm sewer system and provide both localities with investigation and enforcement authority. The goal of the RSEP is to avoid the need for enforcement measures by reminding local business owners of ways they can recycle or safely dispose of substances that could otherwise end up in local streams and rivers.
